Happy 4th of July!

I've only been off nights for five days, so I'm still not fully adjusted to living normal hours. Hubby and Sebastian are both fast asleep next to me, but I'm wide awake; at least What Not to Wear is on. :)

I'm about to enter my longest stretch of time off in weeks; I had today off, won't work Saturday or Sunday, and don't have to go to work until Monday afternoon. This is phenomenal!! Hubby and I spent the day scrubbing the house from top to bottom; we are exhausted, but the place looks amazing. Tonight he grilled fajitas while I made guacamole from scratch ... soooo yummy with lime tortilla chips. We also enjoyed a lime curd tart that I made yesterday. After dark, we attempted to walk to the end of our street to watch a local fireworks display about two miles away, but some local geniuses decided that popping fireworks over parked cars and small children was a bright idea, so we left. Poor Sebastian couldn't take it outside; he did just fine once we got him away from the madness.

Tomorrow we're going to run errands, and I may try my hand at another new dessert if I can make a selection among several great recipes I've been wanting to try. All I know is that we are going to relax!

On a different note, I doubt that anyone from the military reads this, but on the off chance that someone does, I want to say thank you to all the brave men and women who are serving our country and to their families for supporting them as they serve. We appreciate your sacrifices and are grateful for all that you do.

Blah

My last day off was Friday, April 3rd; that was a relaxing and oh-so-fun day! Hubby was able to take the day off from work, so we cleaned the house together (actually not such a bad chore when he's around) and then had 2 of our sweet friends over for fajitas and Wii. I came in dead last in bowling but actually got 2nd place in golf. Good times!

Ever since then, I've been hard at work. I broke down crying Saturday the 4th in front of the NICU nurses over my frustrations regarding the inequality of the workload among the residents and the different management styles of my superiors that left me stuck in the middle. The next day I was on call and cried again in front of my fellow and my attending because the large majority of my patients were getting sick again in front of my eyes; I spent that 25 hours going to deliveries and just trying to survive the night. The following Tuesday I started an elective in child abuse; I have learned SO MUCH and even got to go to court one day to watch one of my attendings testify. Thursday I spent the day getting recertified for PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), so if anyone under the age of 18 crashes, I'm your girl! Over this past weekend, I got to cross-cover Heme-Onc for the weekend -- definitely NOT my favorite thing. 11 brand-new (to me) patients with rounds that dragged on for 4 hours each day (they normally last 2-2.5 hours during the week) ... I was beat down by the end of yesterday.

I've spent the rest of my free time last week studying for my Step 3 licensing exam -- two FUN days at a Prometric testing center! Today honestly wasn't too bad; I was able to finish up early and did a little shopping while I was out. Now I have to get myself excited to go back tomorrow morning and finish it!

In six short days, Hubby and I leave for NYC. Since he travels so much, we have decided to use his airline and hotel points for an anniversary trip every year as long as he continues to travel frequently. Last year was Napa; this year is New York. I've never been before, and he's only been for work, so we're both so excited. We're going to be staying here, taking this food tour, and going to see this musical. The plan is also to go here for an anniversary dinner. We're going to work on a final itinerary this weekend (because I love having a schedule) to see if anything else needs to be pre-arranged before we leave. We're leaving our sweet puppy with his Granny on Saturday, so getting to see my MIL will be a nice way to start our vacation (yes, I actually like my MIL!).

If I can just get through the next 18 hours, I know I will be fine. It's all downhill from here!

Spring cleaning

There is no denying that I am a slob. I have never ever claimed to be a neat person, and while my apartment is clean, it is frequently very messy (big difference). Last night I attempted to find a particular pair of pants to complete the outfit I wanted to wear to clinic; incidentally, the entire outfit was built around showcasing a beautiful necklace I acquired when my mom came to visit 2 weekends ago. As usual, I had issues finding this particular pair of pants because it's easy to miss a pair of simple black pants among the disorganization that is our closet. I've become very apathetic regarding keeping things organized here as I realize we have only about five more weeks here. However, last night was different.

I started looking through my clothes for this particular pair of pants and realized that I had several pairs that did not fit or that had not been worn in years. I separated those into a pile and kept looking for this favorite pair of mine. Then I started to find some shirts that I had saved from several years ago. I had been holding on to these shirts because they were cute! I looked so cute and flirty in them! Then I realized that I hadn't worn most of these clothes in at least 3 to 5 years; they were the clothes I was wearing when I was, um, looking for attention or trying to look young and like I was having fun. Since buying these clothes, I have transformed into a yuppie and am honestly too grown up for them; I have a different definition of cute now. Buh-bye! At this point, I was getting motivated. Time to hit the shoe rack! If I hadn't worn the shoes since moving to Dallas, I figured that I won't wear them again, so I got rid of several pairs.

I'm now minus several feet of clothes from the closet and still have more to go tonight. This is just less to pack and move later!
